UFC 311 in Los Angeles took an unexpected turn when Beneil Dariush’s scheduled fight with Renato Moicano was canceled at the last minute. The shakeup came after Arman Tsarukyan, originally slated to face Islam Makhachev in the lightweight title bout, withdrew due to injury. Moicano was then elevated to the main event, leaving Dariush without an opponent.

Dariush was preparing for his return to the Octagon after over a year’s absence, following back-to-back losses to Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan. Just as weigh-ins approached, Dariush received a text from his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, asking if he could make the lightweight limit of 155 pounds. Dariush complied, optimistic about stepping into the main event against Makhachev. However, the UFC ultimately chose Moicano for the short-notice title fight.

“I thought I was going to fight for the title,” Dariush said in an interview with The Schmo. “But Ali told me, ‘Hey listen, man, they’re giving it to Renato.’”

Despite the cancellation, Dana White and the UFC ensured Dariush was compensated. The 35-year-old revealed that he was paid both his show and win money. “It’s excellent, I can’t complain,” Dariush said. “I appreciate Dana and the UFC for taking care of me.”

This gesture reflects the UFC’s efforts to support fighters affected by last-minute changes. While not every fighter receives full compensation in such scenarios, Dariush’s case highlights the promotion’s commitment to fairness.

Having been out of action since December 2023, Dariush is eager to return to competition. He’s targeting a fight in March or April, ideally against a high-ranking opponent. Dariush specifically mentioned Dustin Poirier, Max Holloway, and Michael Chandler as potential adversaries.

“Ideally, it would be Dustin Poirier,” Dariush explained. “There were talks about us fighting, but it didn’t happen. I’d love for that to change.”

With the lightweight division evolving rapidly, Dariush remains focused on re-establishing himself as a top contender. A win over a high-profile opponent could propel him back into title contention.

The changes to UFC 311’s card added an extra layer of unpredictability to the event. While Dariush’s absence was a disappointment for fans, the promotion’s quick adjustments ensured the main event retained its allure. As Renato Moicano stepped up to face Makhachev, the night continued to deliver the high-stakes action UFC fans have come to expect.
