The much-anticipated heavyweight title unification bout between Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones remains in limbo, and according to Aspinall, Jones is the one holding things up.
Aspinall, who avenged his only UFC loss by defeating Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304, has been eager to unify the division since claiming interim gold in late 2023. Meanwhile, Jones made a thunderous return by knocking out Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last November. Despite UFC officials repeatedly stating that the fight will happen this year, Aspinall remains in the dark about a confirmed date.

In a candid update on his YouTube vlog, Aspinall broke down the situation, revealing that the UFC is fully on board, but the final decision rests with Jones and his camp.
I’ve spoken to the UFC multiple times. I want this fight more than anyone. I keep asking them, ‘When is it happening?’ And they’ve assured me they’re doing everything possible to make it happen.
The stumbling block? According to Aspinall, it comes down to Jones weighing his options—particularly from a financial and risk perspective.
The UFC really wants this fight. This is one of the biggest fights in MMA right now. But does Jon feel comfortable enough, financially or otherwise, to take this risk? That’s the real question.
Aspinall Open to Fighting Someone Else If Jones Stalls
While his priority remains unifying the heavyweight division, Aspinall isn’t ruling out other options if the wait drags on. He’s open to defending his interim title again, possibly against Ciryl Gane or another top contender, rather than sitting on the sidelines indefinitely.
Aspinall added:
I don’t want this division to be stuck in limbo. I don’t want to see Jones chasing super-fights while we’re left waiting.
Jones’ next move remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—Aspinall is ready to step into the octagon, with or without him. Now, the ball is in Jones’ court. Will he take the fight, or will the heavyweight division remain at a standstill?
