Kazakhstan Airport Incident: A terrifying hostage situation unfolded at Almaty International Airport in Kazakhstan, where a 67-year-old man armed with a large knife took 21-year-old security officer Botagoz Mukhtarova hostage. Holding her by the ponytail with a blade pressed against her face, he also claimed to have a bomb in his backpack, threatening to detonate it if anyone intervened.
Passengers and security personnel stood frozen as Mukhtarova screamed for help, fearing for her life. That’s when Musa Abdraim, a 52-year-old retired boxer, stepped forward and did something incredible. “Take me instead,” he told the attacker. His selfless offer was shockingly accepted, and in a moment of sheer bravery, the young woman was released, and Abdraim became the new hostage.

A Fighter’s Instinct Saves the Day
As the assailant kept his grip on Abdraim, the experienced fighter stayed calm, waiting for the right moment to act. When the attacker momentarily lost focus, Abdraim lunged forward, grabbing the knife with his bare hands. A fierce struggle followed, but the former boxer’s quick reflexes and years of training in kickboxing and Muay Thai gave him the edge.
He managed to wrestle the knife away, creating an opening for security forces to tackle and arrest the attacker before anyone was seriously harmed.
Following his arrest, authorities confirmed that while the suspect had threatened to detonate a bomb, no explosive device was found. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and he now faces up to 12 years in prison for hostage-taking, assault, and making terror threats.
A National Hero Honored
Despite his heroic act, Abdraim remained humble, calling his actions “instinctive” and admitting that while he was once a trained fighter, “that was a long time ago.” He also confessed that he felt fear but knew he had to act.
His bravery, however, has not gone unnoticed. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced that Abdraim will receive a state medal for his extraordinary courage.
A father of five, Abdraim had simply come to the Kazakhstan Airport Incident to drop off relatives. He had no idea he would leave that day as a national hero.
