Mike Tyson is one of the most feared and dominant boxers in history. His knockout power and aggressive fighting style made him a nightmare for opponents. However, even “Iron Mike” has admitted to having regrets about his career. One of his biggest? Never stepping into the ring with heavyweight legend George Foreman.

A fight between Tyson and Foreman could have been one of the greatest heavyweight clashes of all time. However, despite serious negotiations, it never materialized. Tyson has since admitted that not fighting Foreman was his biggest career regret, but why didn’t it happen?

Why Didn’t Tyson Fight Foreman?

Throughout his legendary career, Tyson fought and defeated some of the biggest names in boxing, including Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, and Lennox Lewis. But a fight against Foreman, a former heavyweight champion and one of the hardest punchers in boxing history, never happened.

By the late 1980s, Foreman had come out of retirement and was making an impressive comeback. Despite being older than most of his competition, he had strung together a 20-fight winning streak by 1990. This caught the attention of boxing fans, promoters, and even Tyson’s team.

At the time, Don King, Tyson’s promoter, was pushing for the fight, believing it would generate huge money. According to reports, King tried to convince Tyson that Foreman was “old and slow” and would be an easy opponent. However, Tyson refused.

According to Bobby Goodman, King’s former matchmaker, Tyson became furious at the suggestion and reportedly yelled:

I’m not fighting that f**** animal! If you love him so much, you fight him!

Many believe that Tyson, known for his aggressive confidence, genuinely feared Foreman’s power. Unlike many of Tyson’s past opponents, Foreman had a granite chin and devastating punching ability, making him a real threat.

However, any hopes of the fight happening were crushed when Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and sentenced to six years in prison (he served three). By the time he returned to boxing, Foreman had already retired for good.

Did Foreman Fear Mike Tyson Too?

Ironically, Foreman later admitted that he had no desire to fight Tyson either.

Foreman told ESPN:

That guy was a nightmare in the ring. I didn’t want anything to do with him

If he missed you with his left, then missed you with his right, he’d bite you. Those are the guys you see in a nightmare.

Foreman, despite being much bigger than Tyson, recognized that Tyson’s speed and explosiveness made him an unpredictable and dangerous opponent.

While both fighters respected and feared each other in different ways, boxing fans will always wonder what could have happened if the two legends had clashed in the ring. Would Tyson’s speed and aggression have overwhelmed Foreman, or would Foreman’s raw power and durability have secured him the win?

Unfortunately, we’ll never know. But for Tyson, not taking the fight remains one of his biggest regrets.
