Rafael Fiziev, one of the UFC’s most exciting strikers, is at a crossroads after his recent UFC 313 loss to Justin Gaethje. The loss marks his third consecutive defeat, which has lead him to consider a major career shift, potentially a move from lightweight to featherweight.

Rafael Fiziev’s UFC 313 Performance: A Tough Defeat

At UFC 313, Rafael Fiziev fought Justin Gaethje in a very unexpected rematch. Their first bout, which took place in March 2023, ended in a majority decision loss for Fiziev. In their latest encounter, despite his striking skills and resilience, Fiziev fell short once again, losing via unanimous decision.

This loss has extended his losing streak to three, following earlier defeats to Mateusz Gamrot and the previous Gaethje fight. Given the competitiveness of the UFC lightweight division, this loss has sparked serious reflection on his next move.

Why Rafael Fiziev Is Considering a Move to Featherweight

In post-fight interviews, Fiziev revealed an unexpected ease in his weight cut for UFC 313, despite accepting the fight on short notice. His nutritionist even had to encourage him to gain weight during fight week, making him consider whether he belongs in a lighter weight class.

I really cut weight very easy this time and this was short notice. It was very easy. All this week my nutritionist, Jason, he tried to gain my weight because my weight go low so fast. Right now, I have to think about it.

Dropping down to featherweight could give Fiziev a size advantage while maintaining his elite striking and power.

Potential UFC Featherweight Matchups for Rafael Fiziev

If Fiziev moves to featherweight, the division offers exciting new challenges. His elite level Muay Thai and kickboxing could create gruesome fights against top-ranked contenders.

Fiziev himself is confident in his ability to shake up the 145-pound weight class, saying:

I want to fight with top guys, some of the top guys. All of those guys in the top 10 are interesting. These guys are in trouble if I come here. They will be in trouble. Everybody.

Some potential matchups in the UFC featherweight division include Brian Ortega who is a very skilled grappler and can test Fiziev’s takedown defense. We also have fighters like Calvin Kattar, Josh Emmett and Yair Rodriguez who can give Fiziev a good run for his money!

Challenges of Moving to Featherweight

While dropping to 145 pounds may seem like a fresh start, the transition isn’t without risks:

  • Weight Cut Impact: Although Fiziev’s recent cut was easy, consistently cutting more weight may affect his endurance and recovery.
  • New Competition Level: Featherweight is stacked with talented fighters, many of whom excel in cardio, grappling, and high-volume striking.
  • Power vs. Speed Trade-off: While Fiziev may carry more power at featherweight, he’ll also face quicker opponents who specialize in movement and defense.

What’s Next for Rafael Fiziev?

As Fiziev decides his next move, he has only two choices: remain at lightweight and attempt a comeback or go down to featherweight for a clean slate. Both options come with their own pros and cons, but given his struggles at 155 lbs, a move down may be the right call after all.

Whatever Fiziev decides, everyone will be eager to see how “Ataman” bounces back. A well-planned transition to featherweight could position him as an immediate title contender, but it all depends on how him and his body adapts to the change.
