Ilia Topuria, the undefeated Spanish-Georgian UFC star, has officially announced his new nickname as he prepares for the next phase of his career in the lightweight division. Formerly known as “El Matador,” Topuria has chosen “La Leyenda” (The Legend) as his new moniker, symbolizing his aspirations to become one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.

The announcement was made at a special ceremony in Toledo, Spain, where Topuria was honored with a street named after him—Paseo Ilia Topuria.

“‘El Matador’ represented my fighting spirit, my journey to the top. But now, I step into a new era,” Topuria stated. “I believe in my legacy before I see it. ‘La Leyenda’ will be the name that defines my next chapter.”

From Featherweight King to Lightweight Contender

Topuria’s decision to move up to 155 pounds comes after a dominant but short reign as UFC featherweight champion. The 28-year-old fighter captured the 145lb title with a spectacular knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 in February 2024. He then successfully defended his title in October 2024, delivering a stunning stoppage win over Max Holloway at UFC 308—making him the first fighter to ever finish Holloway via strikes.

Despite these victories, Topuria felt his time at featherweight had run its course. With his legacy secured in the division, he decided to vacate the belt and move to lightweight, seeking a new challenge.

Topuria’s Path to the Lightweight Title

The UFC lightweight division is currently ruled by Islam Makhachev, one of the most dominant champions in recent years. However, Topuria has his sights set on challenging for the 155lb belt as soon as possible.

There is speculation that Makhachev could defend his title against another contender before Topuria gets his shot, but the Spanish-Georgian star remains confident in his abilities.

“Lightweight is where I will prove I am the best in the world,” Topuria said. “I am ready for anyone. My goal is to become a two-division champion, and I will make it happen.”

The Future of the Featherweight Division

With Topuria vacating the featherweight title, the UFC wasted no time in setting up a fight for the vacant championship. Former champion Alexander Volkanovski will face rising star Diego Lopes at UFC 314 on April 12 in Miami for the 145lb belt.

  • Volkanovski, 36, held the featherweight title from 2019 to 2024, defending it five times before being dethroned by Topuria. His recent struggles at lightweight, including back-to-back losses to Islam Makhachev, have raised questions about his form. However, a win against Lopes could make him a two-time UFC champion.
  • Diego Lopes, 30, enters UFC 314 on a five-fight win streak, most recently defeating Brian Ortega in September 2024. A victory over Volkanovski would cement his status as the new face of the featherweight division.

A New Era Begins

Topuria’s move to lightweight is one of the most anticipated developments in UFC 2025. With his unbeaten record, knockout power, and elite grappling, he is expected to shake up the 155lb division. Fans eagerly await his next opponent, as he looks to prove why he deserves to be called “La Leyenda.”

Will Topuria claim gold in a second weight class? The UFC lightweight division is about to get even more exciting.
