Pimblett vs Chandler: Paddy Pimblett’s UFC rise has been rapid, brash, and widely discussed — but at UFC 314 in Miami, the Liverpudlian faces what many believe to be the ultimate proving ground. He will square off against former Bellator champion and lightweight contender Michael Chandler in a highly anticipated co-main event on Saturday, April 13.

At 30 years old, Pimblett enters the bout undefeated in his UFC career, riding a six-fight win streak since debuting in 2021. Known for his charisma, confidence, and slick ground game, he has quickly become one of the UFC’s most talked-about figures. But Chandler, 38, represents a different calibre of opponent — a seasoned competitor who has gone toe-to-toe with the division’s elite.

Michael Chandler: A Veteran with Something to Prove

Michael Chandler’s UFC record may not shine on paper — just one win in his last five bouts — but his strength of schedule speaks volumes. The American has fought former champions and top contenders, including Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. His highlight-reel knockout of Tony Ferguson at UFC 274 remains one of the most electrifying finishes in recent memory.

Chandler was previously scheduled to face Conor McGregor in what would have been one of the biggest matchups in UFC history. However, the fight was shelved due to McGregor suffering a toe injury. That bout still looms large as a possibility, but for now, Chandler has turned his attention to the surging Pimblett.

Sean O’Malley Offers Candid Thoughts on the Matchup

Sean O’Malley, the current UFC bantamweight champion and one of the sport’s most recognisable personalities, shared his thoughts on the Pimblett vs. Chandler showdown during media appearances ahead of his own title rematch at UFC 316.

“Paddy versus Michael Chandler is such an interesting fight,” said the 29-year-old. “Michael Chandler is such a gangster for taking that fight. It’s still a big win if he beats Paddy — maybe not in some people’s eyes — but Paddy is f****** skilled.”

O’Malley didn’t hesitate to show respect to both fighters, calling the bout “super competitive” and highlighting the stakes involved. He pointed to Pimblett’s recent submission victory over Bobby Green as evidence of his growing composure and capability in the cage.

“What he did to Bobby Green was super impressive,” O’Malley added. “Michael Chandler is a beast for taking that fight — and Paddy’s a beast too.”

“Too Close to Call” — No Clear Favourite

Despite his admiration for both men, O’Malley refrained from offering a winner prediction.

“I don’t know who wins either,” he admitted. “I feel like it’s gonna be very competitive.”

His long-time coach, Tim Welch, echoed that sentiment, noting Chandler’s athleticism and explosiveness as potential X-factors.

“[Pimblett] could handle it fine, but he’s never been in there with someone that explosive and that athletic,” Welch said.

It’s clear that both O’Malley and his team respect the challenge Pimblett is taking on — but they also recognise the opportunity it presents.

A Clear Path to the Top

While the UFC lightweight division is notoriously stacked, Pimblett is one win away from cracking the top 10 — and potentially just two fights from a title shot.

Currently ranked No.12, a win over No.7-ranked Chandler would mark the biggest victory of his career and accelerate his climb toward the summit of the division.

Pimblett himself outlined his ambitious 2025 plans in an interview with JNMEDIA:

“Probably only two fights this year,” he said. “Beat Michael Chandler, fight in Abu Dhabi in October, beat someone like Charles [Oliveira], and then fight for the belt next year.”

For a fighter once labelled more entertainer than contender, Pimblett’s goals are now firmly championship-focused.

UFC 314: A Miami Fight Night to Remember

UFC 314 is set to deliver one of the most stacked cards of the year. While Pimblett vs. Chandler headlines the co-main event, the main event will feature a clash for the vacant featherweight title between former champion Alexander Volkanovski and Brazilian finisher Diego Lopes.

The card also includes:

  • Bryce Mitchell vs Jean Silva
  • Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire vs Yair Rodriguez
  • Marina Rodriguez vs Mackenzie Dern

With rising stars, returning veterans, and a high-stakes title fight, the event promises fireworks in Miami.

UK Fighters in Action Ahead of UFC 314

Before the chaos in Miami unfolds, British fans can turn their attention to this weekend’s UFC Vegas 105. Manchester’s Lerone Murphy headlines the event against Josh Emmett, while Durham’s Davey Grant also appears on the card, continuing the UK’s strong representation on the global MMA stage.

Final Word: All Eyes on ‘The Baddy’

For Pimblett, UFC 314 will be a night that could define the next stage of his career. A win over Chandler won’t just silence doubters — it may very well secure his place in the title picture.
