The United Center in Chicago, Illinois, hosted UFC 319 on August 16, 2025. This was the UFC’s first time back in Chicago since 2019. The arena was full, and the stakes were high, especially because the middleweight strap was on the line.

Main Card Highlights

Tim Elliott stood out on the pay-per-view event by submitting Kai Asakura in the second round with a mounted guillotine.

Michael Page showed off his unique style against Jared Cannonier and won by unanimous decision, MVP out struck his opponent throughout the fight.  Carlos Prates knocked out Geoff Neal in the welterweight division with an incredible spinning elbow, which was one of the most talked-about finishes of the night. Moving on, Lerone Murphy then knocked out Aaron Pico with another spinning back elbow that was just as beautiful and perfectly timed, making him an even stronger featherweight contender.

UFC 319 Main Event Breakdown: Dricus du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev

The main event featured Dricus du Plessis making his defense of the UFC Middleweight Championship against the undefeated contender Khamzat Chimaev. Du Plessis entered the fight known for his pressure-heavy approach and resilience, while Chimaev had built a reputation as one of the most dominant grapplers in the sport.

Chimaev took control early with a perfect takedown and began asserting his wrestling from top position. He transitioned through various dominant positions, including the crucifix, side control and back control, keeping du Plessis neutralized for most of the fight. Although the champion attempted to generate offense from the bottom and nearly secured a guillotine in the fourth round, Chimaev’s pressure and control left little room for error.

Du Plessis was visibly tired after being held against the canvas for the most part of the fight but he refused to go down or give up and managed to go the distance, he was able to secure a takedown in the final rounds of the fight which earned him the title of being the first person to secure a takedown against Chimaev.

However, All three judges scored the fight 50-44 for Chimaev, awarding him a unanimous decision and the middleweight title. While the fight lacked significant striking exchanges, it was a clear demonstration of elite grappling, pacing, and ground control.

What Comes Next

Chimaev’s win places him firmly at the top of the middleweight division. With his undefeated record now at 15-0, he’s proven he can handle five rounds at championship pace. Potential challengers like Sean Strickland or Israel Adesanya could be in his future, depending on the UFC’s matchmaking direction.

Du Plessis, despite the loss, remains a top-tier contender. His durability and effort against a dominant opponent will likely earn him another high-profile matchup soon or perhaps another shot at the title, Dana white also mentioned that he could make him fight straight away in Abu Dhabi, however any further developments are yet to be reported.

Looking Ahead to UFC 320

Now that UFC 319 is over, attention turns to UFC 320, which will take place on October 4, 2025, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main event features a light heavyweight title rematch between champion Magomed Ankalaev and former champion Alex Pereira. In the co-main event, bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili will defend his title against Cory Sandhagen in a fight that might set the tone for the division for years to come.

There are also more exciting matchups on the card, such as Jiri Prochazka vs. Khalil Rountree Ateba Gautier vs. Ozzy Diaz, and Joe Pyfer vs. Abus Magomedov at middleweight. UFC 320 will be one of the most important cards of the year as the promotion advances into the last few months of 2025. It will feature several ranked competitors and two title fights.
