Kamaru Usman has set the record straight on one of the most debated fights of his career. Nearly two years after his razor-thin majority decision loss to Khamzat Chimaev, the former UFC welterweight king has dismissed the notion that the short-notice circumstances of that bout should define the result. Instead, Usman has chosen to acknowledge the victory for what it was and give full credit to the now-reigning middleweight champion.
Kamaru Usman on Short-Notice Narrative
Kamaru Usman stepped in on just days’ notice to face Chimaev in October 2023 at UFC 294, a fight that many believed showcased his grit and championship pedigree even in defeat. While others were quick to point out the circumstances, Usman refuses to let that narrative overshadow Chimaev’s performance. Usman said on his Pound 4 Pound podcast with Henry Cejudo:
Let’s address this, the whole « Oh you took the fight on short notice. ». At the end of the day, I know who I am as a fighter, and the way I approach this game, and so does Khamzat. It was still a loss on my side and it was a win for him. I don’t feel any type of way about it. It was an L.
The honesty in Usman’s words reflects the mentality that made him one of the most dominant champions in UFC history. Rather than leaning on excuses, the “Nigerian Nightmare” emphasized mutual respect and the unpredictable nature of combat sports.

Respect for the New Champion
Chimaev has since gone on to cement himself as a force at middleweight, capturing the UFC title at UFC 319 by outgrappling Dricus Du Plessis in a dominant display. Usman, one of the few fighters who picked Chimaev to dethrone Du Plessis, highlighted the importance of giving credit where it is due.
Each and every fight we go into as fighters, you don’t know what we’re dealing with. You don’t know what he was dealing with, you don’t know what I was dealing with. Styles make fights, and I’m a much different style than these guys are. Khamzat did his best to get the win and he got that win. So let’s give him that credit and move on.
It is rare to see such candor from a fighter after a close loss, but Usman’s measured approach underlines the championship mindset he still carries.
Usman’s Comeback
The loss to Chimaev marked the end of a difficult stretch in Kamaru Usman’s career, but it was far from the end of his story. After a 20-month layoff, the former welterweight champion returned in June at UFC on ESPN 69, where he snapped the winning streak of knockout artist Joaquin Buckley.
That victory showed that Usman remains a relevant and dangerous contender, even as he enters the later stages of his career. With his legacy as one of the greatest welterweights already secured, his current focus seems to be on testing himself against elite competition rather than chasing narratives.
How Good Was Usman Against Chimaev?
One of the lingering questions following the 2023 fight was just how impressive Usman’s performance really was. Taking on a younger, undefeated contender at a higher weight class on minimal preparation, Usman still managed to push Chimaev to the brink.
For many, that performance reinforced Usman’s greatness and adaptability, even in defeat. While he personally chooses not to dwell on hypotheticals, the respect between the two competitors speaks volumes about the level of competition inside the Octagon that night.
What Comes Next
Chimaev remains undefeated at 15-0 and is now the face of the UFC middleweight division, while Usman has reclaimed momentum with his return win over Buckley. Whether or not their paths cross again remains uncertain, but Usman has already shown that his mindset is fixed on the future rather than the past.
The narrative of excuses and short notice may continue to circle in fight discussions, but for Usman, the matter is closed. The fight happened, the result stands, and his eyes are now on what comes next.
