Losene Keita’s highly anticipated UFC debut ended before it began. Scheduled to face former two-division Bellator champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire at UFC Paris, the Belgian fighter stepped on the scales at 149 pounds three pounds over the non-title featherweight limit. Instead of proceeding at a catchweight, the fight was cancelled, stripping the card of one of its marquee bouts.
Keita, a two-division champion in OKTAGON MMA, had joined the UFC just three weeks earlier. His arrival carried high expectations, with the Paris debut against Pitbull seen as a major test. But weight management struggles forced a setback at the worst possible moment.
Losene Keita Issues Emotional Apology
The 27-year-old turned to Instagram to address the cancellation, apologizing to the UFC, to Pitbull, and to his supporters.
For the first time in 25 fights, I failed to make weight, and it had to happen on my UFC debut…

I wanted to continue and would have given everything to make weight, but my body didn’t want it.
I sincerely apologize to all my fans. I will be back, like every time I fall in life pic.twitter.com/qvTTY4Y1kz
Pitbull’s Harsh Response
Patricio Pitbull, known for his outspoken nature, did not hold back. Speaking to UFC Brazil’s social media team, he mocked Keita’s nickname, branding him “Fat Panther.”
I’m absolutely sure he didn’t try going to the bath tub to cut more weight, Pitbull said. At 9am he weighed in, he was over, and instead of trying until 11am, which is the limit, he was eating baby food. Black Panther? He’s Fat Panther.
Pitbull has since called for a fight against Arnold Allen at UFC Rio next month, signaling he has little interest in rescheduling with Keita.
UFC Confirms Keita’s Future
Despite speculation that Keita’s failed debut could cost him his UFC contract, the promotion has made it clear that he will remain on the roster. During the UFC Paris post-fight press conference, Senior Vice President of International and Content David Shaw expressed confidence in the Belgian’s future.
I believe Keita has a future in the UFC, Shaw said. Honestly, I don’t know the specifics. A few of us were surprised the fight didn’t happen, but in any case, it’s going to be good to have him on the roster.
That assurance keeps Keita’s UFC dream alive. His next steps, however, may involve regaining trust with both matchmakers and fans by proving he can meet weight requirements consistently.
A Decorated Career Before UFC
Keita arrived in the promotion with an impressive résumé. Competing under the OKTAGON banner, he captured the featherweight title in 2023 before moving up to win the lightweight crown later that year. In 2024, he added another lightweight championship through the promotion’s tournament format, defeating four opponents along the way.
With a professional record of 16-1, including 10 knockouts, his only defeat came in 2023 due to a foot injury just one minute into a title bout. His blend of speed, power, and finishing ability made him one of Europe’s brightest prospects and earned him the “Black Panther” moniker.
What Comes Next
While Pitbull has moved on to other potential opponents, Keita will need to regroup quickly. His apology may have softened some of the fallout, but the challenge now is to show he can deliver on the UFC stage.
For a fighter who has built his career on discipline and championship success, the setback is a reminder of the unforgiving nature of mixed martial arts. Still, at 27, Losene Keita has time to rebuild and prove his debut stumble was only a temporary deto’ur.
