Islam Makhachev, the newly crowned UFC welterweight champion, has confirmed that he turned down an offer to defend his title in January 2026 at UFC 324. Makhachev, who captured the welterweight belt by defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025, was approached by the UFC about a potential title defense less than nine weeks after his last fight. However, he ultimately rejected the opportunity due to insufficient preparation time.

In an interview with Russian outlet Ushatayka, Makhachev explained that the UFC contacted him in early December to fight at UFC 324, scheduled for January 24, 2026, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Makhachev said the timeline was “impossible” because he had already spent three months training for UFC 322, leaving him without enough time to start a fresh camp for a January bout. He stated clearly that he would not fight in January but aims to return later in the year.

Reasoning for Declining a Quick Turnaround

Islam’s decision to decline the UFC’s January offer underscores his prioritization of proper fight preparation and peak performance readiness. Turnarounds of less than ten weeks between high-level title fights are rare in MMA because elite competitors typically require 8–12 weeks of focused training to prepare physically and strategically. The Russian champion emphasized that the short notice would not allow him to prepare effectively.

Although the UFC did not officially confirm the opponent they had in mind for the January date, Makhachev suggested that undefeated contender Michael Morales could have been the intended challenger. His co-manager, Ali Abdelaziz, previously told media that names like Kamaru Usman were among those discussed in internal talks.

Makhachev Eyes Fight After Ramadan

After declining the January offer, Makhachev provided an update on his projected return timeline. He indicated that he expects to return to competition after Ramadan, with potential dates in April, May, or June 2026. This timeframe would allow him to begin a full training camp and approach his next title defense in prime condition, something he considers essential for continued success at the highest levels of the UFC. There is also the possibility of him being featured on a special event such as the UFC White House Card if the promotion schedules him accordingly.

In addition to timing, Makhachev has expressed interest in facing some of the strongest contenders in the welterweight division upon his return. Among the names he has publicly mentioned is former champion Kamaru Usman, whom Makhachev views as one of the most challenging matchups due to Usman’s elite wrestling and championship experience.

Impact on Welterweight Title Picture

Makhachev’s choice to delay his next title defense has implications for the UFC welterweight division landscape. With contenders like Morales, Ian Machado Garry, and Shavkat Rakhmonov building momentum, the title picture remains dynamic. Meanwhile, former champion Usman continues to assert his case for a shot at the belt. Some fighters within the division have openly discussed their rankings and positioning, adding intrigue to the fight matchups that could unfold once Makhachev returns.

By prioritizing adequate preparation and aiming for a post-Ramadan return, Islam Makhachev is positioning himself to defend his welterweight title under ideal conditions while pursuing matchups that could further solidify his status among the world’s elite mixed martial artists.
