A potential wrestling super fight between Colby Covington and Georges St-Pierre may be closer than expected.

Speaking in a recent interview, Covington revealed that Real American Freestyle is actively in discussions with St Pierre about competing at an upcoming event. The former UFC interim welterweight champion suggested that the Canadian legend still carries the competitive edge that defined his Hall of Fame career.

“There’s been a lot of traction,” Covington said, hinting that St Pierre could appear as soon as the promotion’s next show. While careful not to disclose too much, he made it clear that serious conversations are taking place behind the scenes.

America vs Canada Angle Gains Momentum

Colby Covington framed the matchup as more than a clash between two elite wrestlers. He positioned it as America versus Canada, tapping into national pride following the United States’ recent overtime victory against Canada in men’s hockey at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Covington said, adding that the wrestling format provides a pure test of takedown skill and control. He openly challenged St Pierre to settle the rivalry on the mats.

“Let’s do this. America versus Canada,”

The storyline adds an extra layer to what would already be a compelling contest. Both men built their UFC legacies on dominant grappling. St Pierre holds the UFC welterweight record with 87 career takedowns, while Covington sits second with 70. The numbers alone create a natural debate over who stands as the division’s greatest takedown artist.

Real American Freestyle’s Growing Platform

Real American Freestyle continues to expand its footprint within combat sports. The promotion, backed by Real American Beer, has drawn attention by blending high level wrestling with crossover MMA personalities.

Covington has become closely associated with the organization. Earlier this year, he secured a 12 to 0 technical fall victory over former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold at RAF 5. The win marked his return to competitive action after a period of inactivity in the UFC.

RAF 7 is scheduled for March 28 at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. The card features Kyle Dake defending his cruiserweight title against Parker Keckeisen. Whether St Pierre appears at that event or a later show remains unclear, but the door appears open.

GSP’s Legacy and Competitive Fire

St Pierre last competed in mixed martial arts at UFC 217, where he submitted Michael Bisping to capture the middleweight title before retiring. He previously defended the welterweight championship nine consecutive times from 2008 through 2013, cementing his reputation as one of the sport’s all time greats.

Though removed from active MMA competition for years, St Pierre has consistently maintained his conditioning and remained involved in martial arts training. Covington believes that competitive spark has not faded.

A wrestling only format removes striking from the equation and shifts focus to positional control and takedown mastery. It would showcase the technical foundations that both fighters used to dominate inside the Octagon.

What About Kamaru Usman

Colby Covington also addressed Kamaru Usman, with whom he fought twice in the UFC. Usman won both meetings at UFC 245 and UFC 268. A trilogy has long been discussed, and Usman has expressed general interest in competing in Real American Freestyle.

However, Covington made it clear that his priority lies with St Pierre. From a historical perspective, a match against GSP carries unique significance. It pits two of the most accomplished wrestlers in UFC welterweight history against each other, without the variables of striking or cage tactics.

Rankings Debate and Future Direction

Despite not competing in the UFC since December 2024, Covington remains ranked inside the top 15 at welterweight. Recent ranking updates even saw him move up one spot, which drew criticism from observers who question the criteria.

For Colby Covington, Real American Freestyle offers a fresh competitive outlet. The structure allows established names to compete without committing to a full MMA training camp.

At 38, he appears motivated to stay active while pursuing matchups that generate interest beyond traditional UFC storylines.
