Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has addressed his recent split from the Professional Fighters League, making it clear that the decision to part ways did not come from his side.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Ngannou explained that while the separation happened earlier this year, the way it was handled caught him off guard.

Ngannou Left Surprised by PFL Announcement
Ngannou revealed that the promotion decided to terminate his contract in January, even though he still had one fight remaining on his deal. What stood out to him was not just the decision itself, but how it was communicated.
According to Ngannou, he was not informed before the announcement went public. Instead, he came across the news the same way many others did. Francis Ngannou on the Ariel Helwani Show
We parted ways in January. It was their decision to part ways, not mine. But I was a little surprised when they sent me the announcement. They should have at least told me since I was holding onto this. At this point, I’m not here to feel emotional about stuff. I just move on. I found it a little weird that they didn’t even tell me.
He admitted that he found the situation unusual, especially given that discussions had been ongoing behind the scenes. While he chose not to dwell on the issue emotionally, he acknowledged that better communication would have made a difference.
One Fight Left, But No Offer Came
A key detail in the situation is that Ngannou still had one fight left on his contract. Despite that, he claims no bout was ever presented to him.
Ngannou suggested that he was open to competing and was waiting for clarity on what would come next. However, that opportunity never materialized.
This raises questions about how the partnership unfolded behind closed doors, particularly considering the expectations around his involvement after signing with the promotion.
A Short Yet Impactful PFL Run
Ngannou’s time with the PFL was brief but notable. He competed once under the banner, delivering a dominant first-round knockout victory over Renan Ferreira at PFL Battle of the Giants in October 2024.
That performance added another highlight to his career, which currently stands at 18 wins and three losses. Known for his knockout power, Ngannou has remained one of the most recognizable figures in heavyweight MMA.
Despite the short stint, his presence brought attention to the promotion, making the sudden split all the more notable.
Focus Shifts to Next Fight Against Philipe Lins
With the PFL chapter now behind him, Ngannou has already shifted focus to his next challenge. He is set to face Philipe Lins in an upcoming bout scheduled for May at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Lins enters the fight with momentum following a unanimous decision win over Ion Cutelaba at UFC 299. With a professional record of 18 wins and five losses, he presents a solid test for Ngannou as he continues his journey outside the PFL structure.
The matchup offers Ngannou a chance to re-establish momentum and move forward after an unexpected turn in his career.
Moving Forward Without Looking Back
Ngannou made it clear that he is not dwelling on the situation. While he admitted the process felt unusual, his focus remains on what lies ahead rather than what has already happened.
His approach reflects a mindset that has defined much of his career. When one chapter closes, he looks for the next opportunity.
With a new fight lined up and his status as a free agent, Ngannou now has the flexibility to shape the next phase of his career on his own terms.
