The tension surrounding UFC Freedom 250 continues to rise after lightweight champion Ilia Topuria addressed his explosive altercation with heavyweight contender Josh Hokit during the UFC White House press conference earlier this month.

What began as routine fight promotion quickly escalated into one of the most talked about moments of the event. Hokit’s verbal jabs aimed at former UFC champion Alex Pereira pushed Topuria over the edge, forcing security to intervene before the confrontation turned physical on stage.

The upcoming UFC Freedom 250 card already carries historic significance as the first major sporting event scheduled to take place on the White House lawn. Now, the growing hostility between several fighters has added another layer of intrigue before fight night on June 14.

Topuria says Hokit’s comments “made my blood boil”

Speaking in a recent interview with Alvaro Colmenero, Topuria explained why Hokit’s remarks sparked such a strong reaction.

I couldn’t believe it, Topuria said. I’ve been at many press conferences, I’ve seen everything. But I’ve never seen anyone stand up and talk about someone’s mother in such a disrespectful way.

The undefeated UFC lightweight champion clarified that he understands trash talk is part of the fight business. However, he believes certain subjects should remain off limits.

You can talk about the other’s professionalism, you can go after each other, it’s fine, Topuria explained. We’re used to it. We know what we’re in for. But talking about the other’s mother in that way, it made my blood boil.

During the press conference in Newark, Hokit directed several remarks toward Pereira despite the two fighters not being scheduled to face each other. Pereira appeared confused during parts of the exchange because of the noise inside the venue, but Topuria immediately took issue with the comments.

Video clips from the event quickly spread online after Topuria threw a cup toward Hokit before security stepped in to separate multiple fighters on stage.

Alex Pereira connection played a role in Topuria’s reaction

Topuria’s support for Pereira did not come out of nowhere. Reports indicate that the Spanish Georgian star had recently spent time training alongside members of Pereira’s camp, including Glover Teixeira and Plinio Cruz.

The group also reportedly traveled together before attending the White House event, strengthening the bond between the fighters ahead of UFC Freedom 250.

That relationship may explain why Topuria reacted so strongly when Pereira became the target of Hokit’s insults.

The cup definitely couldn’t miss, Topuria said while discussing the altercation. Lucky he had so many security people there, because, come on. One of the two was coming out worse off and it wasn’t going to be me.

Those comments only added more fuel to an already tense rivalry.

Josh Hokit refuses to back down

Hokit wasted little time responding after Topuria’s interview circulated online. The heavyweight contender doubled down on his remarks and mocked Topuria’s reaction in a social media post.

You’d never survive at a middle school lunch table in America then, Hokit wrote. You sheltered little boy, I said I’m gonna Chama on his Mama. If that’s so bad, then that begs the question, what does ‘Chama’ even mean?

The phrase appeared to reference Pereira’s famous catchphrase “chama,” which has become closely associated with the Brazilian star over the past few years.

Rather than apologizing, Hokit leaned further into the controversy, continuing the brash persona that has rapidly made him one of the more polarizing names on the UFC roster.

The confrontation also brought additional attention to Hokit’s upcoming clash with Derrick Lewis. While Lewis stayed relatively calm during the press conference chaos, the heavyweight matchup now carries extra publicity heading into fight week.

UFC Freedom 250 continues building massive attention

The White House event was already expected to draw global attention because of its unique setting and stacked lineup. Topuria is set to defend his lightweight title against interim champion Justin Gaethje in the main event, while Pereira and several other high profile names are also expected to compete on the card.

Now, the tension between Topuria and Hokit has become one of the major talking points surrounding the event.

Press conferences have long played an important role in UFC promotion, often creating emotional moments that build anticipation for fights. Still, this particular incident stood out because it involved multiple fighters nearly coming to blows over comments unrelated to their scheduled matchups.

Despite the controversy, Topuria’s reaction may resonate with many inside the sport who believe there should still be limits when it comes to personal insults.

At the same time, Hokit appears fully committed to his confrontational approach as he continues embracing the role of agitator ahead of the biggest fight card of his career.

With another face off expected before UFC Freedom 250, the possibility of more fireworks remains very real.
