Merab Dvalishvili added another win to his résumé at RAF 9, but the former UFC bantamweight champion left the mat with more than just a victory.
Dvalishvili defeated UFC Hall of Famer Frankie Edgar via technical fall in his debut under the Real American Freestyle banner on May 30. While the result showcased the Georgian’s elite wrestling credentials, the contest also resulted in another broken nose for one of MMA’s toughest competitors.
The injury occurred during an accidental clash of heads early in the match. Despite the setback, Dvalishvili continued competing and eventually secured a dominant 12 to 1 victory over the former UFC lightweight champion.
Merab Dvalishvili Unfazed by Another Broken Nose
For many athletes, suffering a broken nose would be cause for concern. For Dvalishvili, it was simply another day at the office.
Speaking after the event, the 35 year old revealed that the injury happened following an accidental head clash with Edgar. Rather than focusing on the damage, he brushed it aside and emphasized that similar injuries have never prevented him from competing.
Yeah. Nose was fine before. But I guess I got a headbutt. It was headbutt and broke it. But who cares? Dvalishvili said.
I broke my nose many times. It’s never stopped me. It’s never gonna stop me. This is just nose broken. That’s what we do. And it’s all good.
The comments reflected the mindset that has helped make Dvalishvili one of the most respected competitors in combat sports. Even after recently dealing with a similar injury during training, he showed little concern about the latest setback.
According to Dvalishvili, injuries are simply part of the profession and something every fighter learns to handle.
A Successful RAF Debut
Although attention quickly shifted toward the injury, Dvalishvili’s performance against Edgar was impressive.
The former UFC champion controlled the action throughout the contest and demonstrated the relentless pace that has become his trademark. His technical fall victory served as another reminder of the wrestling skills that helped him reach the top of the UFC bantamweight division.
Edgar, a former UFC lightweight champion and one of the most accomplished wrestlers in MMA history, provided a credible challenge. Nevertheless, Dvalishvili consistently found answers and pulled away as the match progressed.
The victory also reinforced his desire to remain active while waiting for his next UFC opportunity.
Petr Yan Remains the Main Target
While Dvalishvili enjoyed success in the wrestling world, his long term focus remains firmly fixed on mixed martial arts.
The Georgian confirmed that a trilogy fight with reigning UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan is the matchup he wants next.
The rivalry currently stands at one victory each. Dvalishvili defeated Yan in 2023 before losing the bantamweight title to him via unanimous decision in late 2025.
According to Dvalishvili, UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell indicated that the trilogy bout is expected to happen once Yan is ready to return.
I think it’s a good fight,Dvalishvili said. I think Yan is the best guy right now. He beat me.
The statement highlights the respect Dvalishvili has for his rival while also making it clear that reclaiming UFC gold remains his primary objective.
Henry Cejudo Also on Dvalishvili’s Radar
While waiting for clarity regarding his UFC future, Dvalishvili is also interested in another high profile wrestling match.
The former champion called out Henry Cejudo as a potential opponent for a future RAF event.
Interestingly, Cejudo was initially expected to face Dvalishvili in his promotional debut before withdrawing. Edgar ultimately stepped in as the replacement opponent.
A matchup between Dvalishvili and Cejudo would carry significant intrigue. Both fighters possess elite wrestling backgrounds, and Cejudo’s Olympic gold medal credentials would present a unique challenge.
The matchup could also generate interest among MMA followers familiar with both men’s UFC accomplishments.
Staying Active While Waiting for His UFC Return
One thing remains clear about Dvalishvili. He has no interest in sitting on the sidelines.
Whether competing in wrestling, pursuing another RAF matchup, or preparing for a title fight in the UFC, he continues searching for opportunities to stay busy.
I like to be busy, Dvalishvili said. As you guys know, I’m ready for a fight. I’m just waiting for Petr Yan. Hopefully he will come back. I just saw he’s on vacation right now.
For now, Dvalishvili leaves RAF 9 with a victory, another broken nose, and a clear vision of what comes next. A trilogy fight with Petr Yan remains his ultimate goal, while a potential wrestling showdown with Henry Cejudo offers another intriguing possibility.
If his latest performance proved anything, it is that a broken nose is unlikely to slow him down anytime soon.
