UFC Freedom 250 – What was supposed to be remembered solely as a landmark night for mixed martial arts has now become the center of a major federal investigation.

The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice announced that authorities thwarted an alleged plot to attack UFC Freedom 250, the historic event held on the South Lawn of the White House on June 15. Five men have been arrested and charged in connection with what officials described as a coordinated plan to carry out a mass casualty attack targeting government officials and other attendees.

The event itself proceeded without incident and featured a stacked fight card headlined by Ilia Topuria’s lightweight title defense against Justin Gaethje. However, newly released court documents reveal that federal investigators had been working behind the scenes to stop what they believe could have become a devastating act of violence.

Alleged plan centered on drones and sniper attacks

According to federal prosecutors, the group planned to deploy drones carrying explosives near the White House during UFC Freedom 250. Investigators allege the goal was to force a large scale evacuation from the event before snipers positioned nearby opened fire on fleeing attendees and designated targets.

Court documents state that the suspects communicated through encrypted messaging applications and discussed logistics, funding, weapons procurement and tactical positioning for months before the event.

Among those arrested were Tycen Proper of Ohio, Bryan Roa and Michael Thomas of California, Daniel Eskridge of Missouri and Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez of Nebraska.

Federal authorities believe Alvarez played a leadership role in organizing the alleged operation.

FBI moved quickly after receiving crucial information

The investigation began on June 10 after law enforcement received information about a potential threat.

According to court filings, the breakthrough came when the mother of one of the suspects contacted police in Ohio after becoming concerned about her son’s weapons purchases and online activity.

FBI Director Kash Patel praised the response from investigators and partner agencies.

On June 10, FBI and our law enforcement partners became aware of a potential threat to the UFC America 250 event in Washington, D.C. involving individuals outside of the National Capital Region, Patel said.

“Thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also commended the agencies involved in the operation.

“The FBI, our law enforcement partners and our U.S. Attorneys did what they do every day to make America safe through quick response and vigilance in investigating, disrupting, and dismantling this alleged plan before it could be carried out,” Blanche said.

UFC Freedom 250 proceeded without disruption

Despite the serious nature of the threat, UFC Freedom 250 was held as scheduled and became one of the most unique events in combat sports history.

The card was staged on the White House grounds as part of celebrations surrounding the 250th anniversary of American independence and drew a crowd that included President Donald Trump, senior government officials, lawmakers and invited guests.

Inside the cage, several high profile bouts delivered memorable finishes.

In the main event, Ilia Topuria retained the lightweight championship with a fourth round stoppage victory over Justin Gaethje. Alex Pereira also captured attention with a knockout victory over Ciryl Gane in their heavyweight title bout.

Elsewhere on the card, Sean O’Malley, Mauricio Ruffy, Bo Nickal and Diego Lopes all earned stoppage victories.

While the action inside the Octagon generated headlines throughout the evening, the revelation of the alleged attack plot has now added an entirely different dimension to the event’s legacy.

Officials highlight growing security challenges

Authorities say the case highlights evolving security concerns surrounding major sporting events and public gatherings.

U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran stressed the importance of proactive intelligence gathering and cooperation between agencies.

“Protecting the President of the United States and the White House grounds is priority number one for the U.S. Secret Service,” Curran said.

“The landscape has changed, and as a result we have seen a dramatic rise in threats against our protectees.”

Vice President JD Vance also described the alleged conspiracy as highly organized rather than an isolated effort.

Twenty three people do not get to the point where they’re going to commit a mass terror incident in Washington, D.C. without some serious funding, without some serious coordination, Vance said.

“That’s not a few guys doing crazy stuff, that is a coordinated planned terrorist plot.”

Investigation remains ongoing

Federal authorities indicated that the investigation is far from complete and additional charges could emerge as evidence continues to be reviewed.

At least three of the defendants currently face conspiracy to commit murder charges, while others have been charged with weapons related offenses and conspiracy against the United States.

If convicted on the most serious counts, the accused could face life imprisonment.

For now, UFC Freedom 250 remains a historic chapter in both combat sports and American sporting history. What unfolded inside the cage delivered memorable moments for fight fans. What happened outside it may have prevented a far more tragic outcome.
