Charles Oliveira’s homecoming at UFC Rio could not have been scripted better. The Brazilian star, competing in front of an electric crowd at the Farmasi Arena, made quick work of Mateusz Gamrot with a second-round submission. But it wasn’t just the victory that got people talking, it was what came after.

With the microphone in hand, “Do Bronx” made his intentions crystal clear. “Hey Hunter, Charles Oliveira vs. Max Holloway. BMF title. Let’s make it happen,” Oliveira declared, sending the MMA world into a frenzy.

It didn’t take long for the reigning BMF champion to respond. Within minutes, Max Holloway went live on streaming platform Kick and delivered a simple but powerful answer: “I’m interested. Why wouldn’t I be?”

A Decade-Old Chapter Waiting for Closure

For fight fans, the idea of Holloway vs. Oliveira 2 is more than just another matchup, it’s unfinished business. The two first met in 2015, back when both were rising prospects in the UFC’s featherweight division. That night ended in bizarre fashion, with Oliveira suffering an esophagus injury just over a minute into the bout. Holloway was declared the winner, but it left questions lingering.

Since then, both men have transformed into legends in their own right. Holloway became one of the most dominant featherweight champions in UFC history, holding the title from 2017 to 2019 and defending it three times. Oliveira, on the other hand, reinvented himself at lightweight, capturing the UFC title in 2021 and cementing his place as one of the most dangerous finishers in MMA history.

Now, a rematch between the two has the potential to be one of 2026’s biggest events.

Max Holloway’s Terms: No Rio, Maybe March

While Holloway didn’t hesitate to accept the challenge, he made it clear that the fight would happen on his terms.

Speaking candidly on Kick, Holloway said

We fight on my terms, brother. We went to Rio. We did that with the ‘King of Rio’ [Jose Aldo]. Now it’s my turn to have a say.

Currently recovering from a hand injury sustained in his BMF title defense against Dustin Poirier at UFC 318, Holloway mentioned that March 2026 could be a “very possible” return date. However, he isn’t interested in waiting until the rumored UFC event at the White House in June 2026.

I don’t know if I want to wait that long, but we’ll see what happens. Never say never.

Charles Oliveira’s Response: “Anywhere in the World”

Oliveira didn’t flinch when told about Holloway’s timeline and conditions. Speaking through an interpreter at the UFC Rio post-fight press conference, the Brazilian readily agreed to Holloway’s terms.

It can be at his house. If it’s not in Brazil, it can be anywhere in the world. March is perfect. It’s a perfect fight. It would be awesome to see Hawaii.

That kind of enthusiasm only adds to the anticipation. Two former champions. Two fan favorites. One symbolic belt that represents pure fighting spirit.

The Road to Redemption

For both fighters, this bout isn’t just about the BMF title. It’s about rewriting history.

Holloway is looking to continue his resurgence after bouncing back from his knockout loss to Ilia Topuria in 2024. Oliveira, meanwhile, is on a mission to remind everyone that his story is far from over after losing to Topuria for the lightweight crown earlier this year.

With their respective comeback wins, Oliveira’s against Gamrot and Holloway’s against Poirier, both men are back in top form, setting the perfect stage for a collision that feels inevitable.

What Happens Next?

While no official confirmation has come from the UFC, this matchup seems too good to pass up. With Holloway’s hand on the mend and Oliveira eager to prove he’s still elite at 155, a BMF showdown in early 2026 could be one of the most marketable fights of the year.

Stylistically, it’s a dream pairing. Holloway’s relentless pace and volume striking against Charles Oliveira’s world-class grappling and underrated boxing promise fireworks. Both men have matured tremendously since their first meeting, and both carry something to prove.
