Firas Zahabi is a globally respected MMA coach, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and the head of Tristar Gym in Montreal. Best known for coaching UFC legend Georges St-Pierre, Zahabi has built a reputation as one of the most intelligent and effective minds in combat sports. His unique coaching philosophy, academic background, and success in developing elite fighters have made him a cornerstone of modern mixed martial arts.
Early Life and Martial Arts Journey
Born on February 5, 1980, in Quebec, Canada, to Lebanese immigrant parents, Firas Zahabi didn’t start in martial arts. His early athletic interests were focused on football. However, everything changed after he witnessed Royce Gracie’s dominance in the early UFC events, which sparked his interest in jiu-jitsu and MMA. He began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, and wrestling, eventually earning his BJJ black belt under John Danaher in 2011, one of the most prestigious lineages in the sport.
In parallel with his martial arts training, Zahabi earned a degree in philosophy from Concordia University, which has deeply influenced his coaching style, giving him a strategic and analytical approach to combat sports.

Taking Over Tristar Gym and Coaching GSP
Firas Zahabi joined Tristar Gym in the early 2000s and quickly rose to prominence. By the mid-2000s, he had become the head coach and eventually took over ownership. Under his leadership, Tristar became one of the premier MMA gyms in the world.
His most famous student is Georges St-Pierre, widely considered one of the greatest fighters in UFC history. Zahabi took over as GSP’s lead coach following his 2007 upset loss to Matt Serra. From that point forward, he helped St-Pierre reclaim the welterweight title and dominate the division with a historic run of successful title defenses. Zahabi’s strategic planning and attention to detail were crucial in St-Pierre’s eventual capture of the UFC middleweight title as well.

Training Elite Fighters Beyond St-Pierre
Zahabi’s influence goes far beyond Georges St-Pierre. He has worked with top-tier athletes including Rory MacDonald, Kenny Florian, Miguel Torres, Robert Whittaker, and his younger brother Aiemann Zahabi, who currently competes in the UFC bantamweight division.
His ability to tailor training plans for each fighter’s strengths and weaknesses sets him apart from many of his peers. Fighters under Zahabi often show high fight IQ, efficient movement, and excellent conditioning, all hallmarks of his coaching style.
Coaching Philosophy and Training Approach
What makes Zahabi unique is his philosophy-first coaching method. Rather than relying on hard sparring and physical wear and tear, he emphasizes long-term athlete development through technical precision, recovery, and intelligent strategy. He is often quoted as saying “consistency beats intensity,” a line that reflects his belief in sustainability over burnout.
His methods have been praised for producing champions while minimizing injuries, something many modern fighters and coaches are actively seeking as the sport evolves.
Current Role and Lasting Legacy
Today, Firas Zahabi remains at the helm of Tristar Gym, continuing to coach high-level professionals and rising prospects. He is also active in the MMA community through YouTube breakdowns, podcast appearances, and online coaching programs, sharing his insights with a global audience.
Zahabi’s legacy is not only measured by championships but also by his influence on how the sport approaches training.
