Gable Steveson has already conquered one sport. The 25-year-old wrestling prodigy captured Olympic gold in Tokyo and became a two-time NCAA national champion, establishing himself as one of the most dominant wrestlers of his generation. Now, he’s ready for a new mountain to climb mixed martial arts.
Gable Steveson returns to competition on October 30, headlining Dirty Boxing Championship 4 (DBX 4) at The Pinnacle in Nashville, where he’ll face Chattanooga’s Billy Swanson. It’s only his second professional bout, but his intentions are clear he wants to become the next great heavyweight superstar in MMA.
If Steveson needed any guidance in this new chapter, he found it in the best possible mentor Jon Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.
Jones, who co-owns Dirty Boxing Championship, will be ringside as Steveson’s coach on fight night. Their partnership began when Steveson joined Jones’ camp ahead of his title defense against Stipe Miocic in 2024. What started as mutual respect between two elite athletes quickly turned into a dynamic coach-fighter relationship.
I feel like I gave him a good spark, Steveson said. We were two guys with no ego who came together to win. Now he’s in my corner helping me become the best version of myself.
Meet Jon Jones & Ryan Garcia at DBX 4! 👀
Dirty Boxing takes over Nashville, Tennessee — LIVE from The Pinnacle.
Dirty Boxing Championship, launched in 2024, blends elements of MMA and boxing with a unique rule set. Fighters wear four-ounce gloves and are allowed elbows, spinning backfists, and standing ground-and-pound but no kicks or grappling.
For Steveson, who made a successful MMA debut last month with a 90-second finish at LFA 217, DBX 4 offers a chance to showcase his evolving striking skills.
I wanted to handicap my wrestling and go out there and strike, he explained. I want to show the world that I can put it on somebody on the feet, on the ground, north, south, east, and west.
This event isn’t just a fight; it’s a statement. Steveson wants to prove he’s not a one-dimensional wrestler but a complete mixed martial artist capable of dominating in any position.
The Challenge Ahead: Billy Swanson
Across the ring will be Billy Swanson, a heavyweight veteran from Chattanooga with a 4–3 professional record and nearly a decade of experience in promotions like Bellator, PFL, and LFA. Swanson most recently competed in BKFC, taking a short-notice fight earlier this year.
He sees the matchup with Steveson as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I prayed for this. God sent me the Olympic champion to shock the world. I just want to be the best version of myself.
While Swanson enters as the underdog, his experience and toughness make him a dangerous test for Steveson, especially as the latter continues adapting to the striking-heavy Dirty Boxing format.
Aiming to Be the Face of MMA
Steveson’s ambition extends far beyond winning fights. He’s aiming to become a household name — someone who transcends sport.
What I’ve tried to do with wrestling is be the sport,” he said. In MMA, I want to be MMA. I want to be that guy people look at and say, ‘He’s larger than life, but still humble and real.’ When it’s showtime, I want people to say, ‘We need to watch him.
It’s a mindset that mirrors the path of icons like Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, and Ronda Rousey, athletes who defined eras not only with skill but with presence.
Nashville Becomes the Center of Combat Sports
DBX 4 marks the promotion’s first major event in Nashville, a city that’s quickly becoming a hub for combat sports. Stars like Ryan Garcia have already confirmed their attendance, further raising the event’s profile.
Combat sports are at their best when the energy, talent, and atmosphere all come together, Garcia said in a statement. DBX is doing exactly that, and I’m excited to see it firsthand
For Steveson, performing in front of legends and stars is exactly where he wants to be. Every fight, every crowd, and every headline is part of his journey toward becoming a global MMA attraction.
The Road Ahead
With a dominant debut behind him and Jon Jones in his corner, Gable Steveson’s potential in MMA seems limitless. The transition from Olympic wrestling to professional fighting is not easy, but his mix of athleticism, confidence, and humility makes him a rare prospect.
As he prepares to headline DBX 4, Gable Steveson isn’t just chasing victories he’s chasing legacy.
