The UFC is heading back to Abu Dhabi with a high stakes light heavyweight showdown that could have major title implications. On Monday, the promotion officially announced that former UFC light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev will face Khalil Rountree Jr. in the main event of UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi on July 25 at Etihad Arena. The card will also feature a pivotal bantamweight contest between Umar Nurmagomedov and fast rising contender David Martinez in the co main event.

With several ranked fighters and promising prospects scheduled to compete, the event is shaping up to be one of the strongest Fight Night cards of the year.

Magomed Ankalaev Begins the Road Back

For Magomed Ankalaev, the matchup represents an opportunity to reestablish himself in the title picture after a difficult end to 2025.

The Dagestani fighter enters the contest with a professional record of 21 wins, two losses, and one draw. He captured the light heavyweight championship by defeating Alex Pereira at UFC 313 before surrendering the belt in their rematch at UFC 320 last October.

That defeat ended an impressive seven year unbeaten run inside the Octagon and temporarily halted his rise to the top of the division.

Now ranked No. 1 at 205 pounds, Ankalaev is determined to put himself back in position for another championship opportunity.

According to the UFC announcement, the former champion is targeting a decisive victory in Abu Dhabi to strengthen his case for a future title shot.

Khalil Rountree Jr. Looking to Play Spoiler

Standing across from Ankalaev will be one of the division’s most dangerous strikers.

Rountree enters the fight as the No. 5 ranked light heavyweight and another former title challenger seeking a return to championship contention.

The Las Vegas based fighter has experienced mixed results in recent outings but remains one of the most explosive finishers in the weight class. Last June, he secured a notable unanimous decision victory over former champion Jamahal Hill in Baku, reminding everyone of his ability to compete with elite opposition.

A win over Ankalaev would instantly elevate Rountree back into the title conversation and potentially secure another shot at UFC gold.

While Ankalaev enters as the higher ranked fighter, Rountree’s knockout power ensures he remains a dangerous threat from the opening bell.

Umar Nurmagomedov Faces Rising Star David Martinez

The co main event could have major implications for the bantamweight division.

Former title challenger Umar Nurmagomedov will look to continue rebuilding momentum following the first loss of his professional career.

After falling short against Merab Dvalishvili in a championship bout, Nurmagomedov responded with consecutive victories over Mario Bautista and former UFC champion Deiveson Figueiredo.

Those performances helped solidify his position among the division’s elite contenders.

His next challenge comes against David Martinez, one of the fastest rising names at 135 pounds.

Martinez has compiled an impressive 14 and 1 record and has quickly established himself as a legitimate contender since arriving in the UFC. Victories over experienced names such as Rob Font and Marlon Vera have accelerated his rise and earned him the biggest fight of his career.

For Nurmagomedov, this matchup presents a chance to stay near the top of the rankings. For Martinez, it is an opportunity to announce himself as a genuine title threat.

Deep Card Adds International Flavor

Beyond the headline bouts, UFC Abu Dhabi will feature competitors from across the globe.

Former flyweight title challenger Steve Erceg meets Uzbekistan’s Ramazan Temirov in an intriguing flyweight matchup. Ranked heavyweights Rizvan Kuniev and Tyrell Fortune are also scheduled to collide in a bout that could impact the division’s rankings.

Fans will also get their first look at undefeated prospect Magomed Tuchalov, who makes his UFC debut against veteran Brendson Ribeiro.

Other notable fights include Valter Walker against Thomas Petersen, Ismael Bonfim versus Axel Sola, and Islam Dulatov taking on Wellington Turman.

The card reflects the UFC’s continued commitment to showcasing international talent while strengthening its presence in the Middle East.

Abu Dhabi Remains a Key Destination

Over the past several years, Abu Dhabi has become one of the UFC’s most important international markets. The partnership between the promotion and the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi has consistently delivered major events featuring championship fights, title contenders, and rising prospects.

This year’s Fight Night continues that tradition.

With Magomed Ankalaev seeking redemption, Rountree chasing another title opportunity, Nurmagomedov looking to climb back into contention, and Martinez attempting to break into the elite tier, the stakes will be high when the Octagon returns to Etihad Arena on July 25.

For several fighters on the card, a victory in Abu Dhabi could prove to be the turning point that shapes the next chapter of their UFC careers.
