Tom Aspinall has delivered the update UFC fans have been waiting months to hear. The heavyweight champion has officially returned to full training after recovering from a serious eye injury and confirmed that discussions with the UFC are underway for a title unification clash against interim champion Ciryl Gane.

The announcement comes nearly eight months after Aspinall’s first meeting with Gane ended in heartbreaking fashion. Their heavyweight title bout was ruled a no contest after an accidental eye poke left the British star with a severe injury that ultimately required multiple surgeries.

Now, with his recovery complete, the heavyweight division finally appears ready to move again.

Tom Aspinall confirms return to full training

Tom Aspinall shared the positive update with supporters through social media, revealing that he has resumed full training while also confirming that negotiations with the UFC have already begun.

“Back in full training for the Ciryl Gane fight and we’re currently in talks with the UFC,” Aspinall wrote.

He also announced the release of a new podcast series documenting his rehabilitation.

We filmed The Inner Game during my recovery between February and March, and those conversations genuinely helped me through a tough time. These episodes will be coming out over the next 12 weeks while I’m in camp.

The update marks a major turning point after months of uncertainty surrounding one of the UFC’s biggest champions.

A difficult road back

Aspinall’s injury proved far more serious than initially expected.

After the accidental eye poke during UFC 321, the English heavyweight underwent multiple procedures while spending months away from full training. The lengthy recovery left the heavyweight title picture frozen, with fans and fellow fighters eagerly awaiting news on his return.

During his absence, interim champion Ciryl Gane remained active, stopping former two division champion Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 to capture interim heavyweight gold.

That victory positioned Gane for the inevitable rematch with Aspinall, setting up one of the biggest heavyweight fights the UFC can make this year.

Unfinished business with Ciryl Gane

The rivalry between Aspinall and Gane remains unresolved.

Their first contest lasted only a few minutes before the accidental foul brought the fight to an abrupt end, denying both men the opportunity to settle matters inside the Octagon.

Gane has since called for the rematch and even suggested a showdown in Paris.

Aspinall recently responded positively to that possibility, saying,

Paris in September? I’ll do that. Let me know. I don’t mind. I’ll go to Paris.

More recently, the champion also poked fun at Gane’s reputation for controversial moments by posting a humorous training video featuring protective headgear and extra equipment while jokingly preparing for another meeting with the French contender.

Despite the lighthearted approach, the rivalry has become increasingly personal after Gane was criticized for illegal strikes during his victory over Pereira.

UFC heavyweight division finally starts moving

Tom Aspinall’s return provides a huge boost for the UFC heavyweight division, which has remained largely inactive while its undisputed champion recovered.

With both titleholders now healthy and willing to fight, attention shifts toward when and where the blockbuster rematch will happen.

Although no official date has been announced, speculation continues to grow around a late 2026 pay per view event, with Abu Dhabi emerging as one possible destination.

Before any fight becomes official, negotiations between the UFC and Aspinall’s management team will need to be finalized. The champion recently partnered with boxing promoter Eddie Hearn to oversee his business affairs, adding another layer to discussions surrounding his return.

Heavyweight title unification edges closer

For now, the biggest takeaway is simple. Tom Aspinall is healthy again.

The British champion has resumed full training, confirmed active discussions with the UFC and made it clear that Ciryl Gane is the opponent he wants next.

After months of uncertainty, the UFC heavyweight division finally has momentum once again. If negotiations continue smoothly, fans may not have to wait much longer before seeing one of the sport’s most anticipated rematches finally take place.
