Islam Makhachev has added another remarkable achievement to his already decorated combat sports career after receiving one of Russia’s highest athletic honors ahead of his return at UFC 330.
The reigning UFC welterweight champion has officially been awarded the title of Honored Master of Sport of Russia, recognizing both his success as a Combat SAMBO World Champion and his contribution to promoting the sport on the global stage.
The honor comes just weeks before Makhachev defends his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, where he will look to further strengthen his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of his generation.

A prestigious recognition for an extraordinary career
Russia’s Ministry of Sport awarded Makhachev the honorary title after years of excellence in Combat SAMBO and mixed martial arts. The distinction is reserved for athletes who achieve exceptional success at the highest international level.
Makhachev has enjoyed a historic rise in the UFC, becoming a champion in two weight classes while also reaching the top of the promotion’s pound for pound rankings.
International SAMBO Federation President Vasily Shestakov praised the champion’s influence on the sport.
Islam is an outstanding athlete, a Combat SAMBO World Champion, and he has made an unprecedented contribution to popularizing our beloved martial art on the international stage.
Shestakov also highlighted Makhachev’s commitment to representing SAMBO throughout his UFC career.
He consistently and proudly speaks of Combat SAMBO as his home discipline, demonstrating in the cage just how powerful and effective our sport truly is.
Islam Makhachev continues to represent SAMBO worldwide
This latest honor follows another major recognition earlier this year when Makhachev was officially named a SAMBO Ambassador to the World by the International SAMBO Federation.
The Dagestani star has repeatedly credited Combat SAMBO as the foundation of his success inside the Octagon, often pointing to the discipline whenever discussing his fighting style.
Speaking during his appointment as ambassador, Makhachev explained that the title simply formalized a role he had already embraced.
I already told Vasily Borisovich that I was unofficially a SAMBO ambassador to the world anyway.
He also grouped himself alongside two of the sport’s biggest icons.
People know me, Fedor, and Khabib as SAMBO representatives. I think anyone who understands MMA will agree that the best fighters are SAMBO fighters.
Joining an elite group of Russian legends
The award places Makhachev alongside legendary names such as Fedor Emelianenko and his longtime mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov, both of whom have also played major roles in bringing SAMBO to international audiences through mixed martial arts.
Over the past few years, Makhachev has steadily built a résumé worthy of that company. After dominating the lightweight division, he successfully moved up to welterweight and captured a second UFC championship, becoming one of the select few fighters in promotional history to win titles in multiple weight classes.
His consistent performances against elite competition have helped establish him as one of the most accomplished active fighters in the sport.
Focus shifts to UFC 330
While Makhachev can celebrate another milestone outside the cage, his attention now turns back to competition.
The Russian champion is scheduled to make the first defense of his UFC welterweight title against top contender Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia.
Machado Garry enters the contest riding an impressive winning streak and will attempt to produce the biggest victory of his career by dethroning one of the most dominant champions in the UFC.
A successful title defense would further strengthen Makhachev’s growing legacy while adding another chapter to an already historic career.
Receiving one of Russia’s highest sporting honors only reinforces the impact he has made beyond mixed martial arts. As both a world champion in Combat SAMBO and a two division UFC titleholder, Makhachev continues to represent his country and his martial art on the biggest stage in combat sports.
