Santos withdraws from UFC Paris
Nathaniel Wood will have a new opponent when he steps into the Octagon at UFC Paris on September 5.
The No. 8 ranked featherweight was originally scheduled to face The Ultimate Fighter Season 32 winner Mairon Santos at Accor Arena in Paris. Santos has since withdrawn from the contest for undisclosed reasons, leaving the UFC with only a few days to find a replacement.
That search has now produced an intriguing matchup. Undefeated Moldovan fighter Pavel Andrusca has agreed to step in and make his UFC debut against Wood on short notice.
The change gives the fight a very different complexion. Wood was preparing for a proven prospect in Santos, but he will now face a fighter who has never competed inside the UFC and has spent his entire professional career at bantamweight.
Pavel Andrusca brings an unbeaten record
Andrusca enters the biggest opportunity of his career with a perfect 8 and 0 professional record.
The 24 year old has finished seven of those eight victories and is currently riding a seven fight finishing streak. His record includes six knockout wins, with five of his stoppages coming in the opening round.
His most recent appearance came at UAE Warriors 72 in July, where he scored a first round knockout against Gexipengchu. Andrusca stopped the Chinese veteran with a right hand at 2:09 of the opening round, giving him another emphatic finish before his move to the UFC.
The statistics underline why the UFC viewed him as a suitable replacement despite the extremely short turnaround. Andrusca has consistently looked for the finish throughout his career and has won seven consecutive fights before receiving his first UFC opportunity.
However, his debut will come with an unusual challenge.
Andrusca moves up to featherweight
Andrusca has competed exclusively at bantamweight throughout his professional career. He will now move up to featherweight to face one of the division’s ranked fighters with only a few days to prepare.
The physical and competitive jump makes the assignment particularly demanding. Wood is ranked eighth in the UFC featherweight division and has already established himself as a consistent presence in the promotion.
For Andrusca, the opportunity is significant. A victory over a ranked opponent in his UFC debut would immediately put him on the featherweight radar and provide a major boost to his standing within the division.
At the same time, the short preparation period means he will have limited time to adjust to the demands of fighting at a higher weight against an experienced UFC opponent.
Wood has plenty at stake
Wood enters the contest with momentum of his own.
The Englishman has won four consecutive fights and has built an 11 and 3 UFC record. His current run includes victories over Losene Keita, Jose Delgado, Morgan Charriere and Daniel Pineda.
The four fight winning streak has helped Wood establish himself inside the featherweight top ten. That makes the replacement matchup particularly important for him.
Instead of facing Santos, Wood will now meet an opponent with no UFC experience but an unbeaten record and a strong finishing rate. The change means Wood must prepare for an unfamiliar fighter while still protecting his position in the rankings.
Sherdog noted that the replacement leaves Wood with significant risk because Andrusca is an undefeated knockout artist whom many UFC viewers will not have seen compete before.
UFC Paris remains an important card
The Wood and Andrusca matchup adds another compelling contest to the UFC Paris lineup.
Dan Hooker and Salahdine Parnasse headline the September 5 event, while the card also features Michael Page against Nursulton Ruziboev, Morgan Charriere against Felipe Lima and Losene Keita against Muhammad Naimov.
Wood now has just days to make the final adjustments for an opponent who represents a completely different challenge from the one he originally expected.
For Andrusca, the opportunity could change the direction of his career immediately. He arrives unbeaten, confident in his finishing ability and willing to step into the UFC on extremely short notice.
The circumstances surrounding the matchup make it difficult to predict how the fight will unfold. Wood brings established UFC experience, ranking and momentum, while Andrusca brings an unbeaten record and a reputation for ending fights early.
When the two meet inside Accor Arena, Wood will be looking to continue his rise in the featherweight division. Andrusca will be attempting to make an immediate statement in his first UFC appearance.
