Merab Dvalishvili, the UFC’s #1 bantamweight contender, is no stranger to pushing through adversity. Known for his relentless pace and unmatched toughness, Dvalishvili has accepted one of the most challenging fights of his career despite a serious injury impacting his training camp. On January 18 at UFC 311, he willl step into the octagon against undefeated phenom Umar Nurmagomedov in a highly anticipated co-main event.

In a candid interview, Dvalishvili confessed that he’s entering this fight far from 100% fit. A lingering injury has disrupted his usual training regimen, forcing him to adapt his preparations. While the exact nature of the injury remains undisclosed, Dvalishvili admitted it has significantly affected his ability to train at full intensity.

“I’m not perfect,” Dvalishvili said. “I’ve been dealing with some issues, and it’s been tough to train the way I usually do. But I’m a fighter, and I’m not going to let anything stop me from competing.”

The bout against Nurmagomedov presents a unique set of challenges for Dvalishvili. Umar, a cousin of the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, brings an undefeated record (17-0) and a well-rounded skill set to the Octagon. Known for his grappling prowess and striking precision, Umar is widely considered one of the most dangerous rising stars in the division.

For Dvalishvili, this fight isn’t just about maintaining his top contender status but proving that he can overcome any obstacle—even one as daunting as an injury. “This is a test of my spirit and my determination,” he said. “I respect Umar as a fighter, but I’m coming to win, no matter what.”

To compensate for his injury, Dvalishvili has adjusted his training schedule, focusing more on strategy and mental preparation.

“I’ve had to get creative with my training,” he shared. “It’s not ideal, but it’s taught me to think differently about how I approach a fight. Sometimes, less is more.”

Dvalishvili’s camp has emphasized game-planning to counter Nurmagomedov’s strengths. With his high fight IQ and cardio unmatched in the division, Dvalishvili hopes to turn his injury into a minor footnote in what could be a career-defining performance.
